WELCOME TO YEAR 5

We have had a busy start to the year, with students working hard to ADAPT to life in Year 5.  With many new procedures and routines to get used to, students are modifying their behaviours to ADAPT to their new environment!

TERM 1

SCIENCE
We are studying plant and animal adaptation, focusing on how plants and animals have to modify their behaviour and their growth patterns to adapt to the environment.  Following a generalised study of plants and animals, we will focus our attention on the plant and animals of North Stradbroke Island.

HISTORY
Following a quick review of the arrival of the First Fleet, we are now looking at the colonisation of Australia, focusing on the hardships encountered by the settlers in the new colony established at Port Jackson.  As the term progresses, we will look at the expansion of the colonies, with particular reference to the establishment of the penal colony of Moreton Bay.

MATHS
The National Curriculum is followed, using the text Maths Plus and the supporting text, Maths Mentals.  Preparation for NAPLAN testing using past test papers will also occur.

ENGLISH
Study areas are in line with the National Curriculum, with a focus on writing Narrative and Persuasive texts.  Spelling Rules and Grammar Rules are the year level texts, with further attention focused on grammar, punctuation and spelling techniques and skills.

RELIGION
The new Religious Education Curriculum is being followed.  Our topic for this term is Prayer, Praise, Psalms. We will also look at the important religious personalities who influenced the new settlers in the colonies.

ART
We will create a variety of landscapes using various medium, which ties in with our study of environments in Science and History.  Students' weekly art work will be displayed in the classroom throughout the term.
